The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspected hoodlums linked to the armed gang that attacked the convoy of a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngige, in the state.
The arrest was disclosed on Thursday in Awka by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
It will be recalled that Senator Ngige’s convoy was attacked in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State in early December 2025.
In a statement, the command said it recorded a major operational breakthrough in the early hours of January 14, 2026, as part of its sustained efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of lives and property.
According to the statement, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acting on credible and actionable intelligence, laid an ambush for a five-man gang of armed hoodlums at Enugwu Agidi Junction, Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects were described as armed robbers and cultists with links to a proscribed secessionist group.
The police said the suspects engaged the operatives in a fierce gun battle that lasted about two hours, during which two members of the gang sustained fatal gunshot injuries, while three others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
Items recovered from the scene included one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition, 15 live cartridges, assorted criminal charms, a cult red beret, and a black Toyota Highlander vehicle.
The statement further revealed that one of the injured suspects, before dying, confessed that members of the gang were among those who carried out the failed attack on Senator Ngige’s convoy.
He also admitted that the group doubled as a strike squad of the Vikings Confraternity, allegedly on a mission to retaliate the killing of one of their members by a rival cult group.
Commending the gallantry of the operatives, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, charged them to intensify efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects who escaped with gunshot injuries.
The police also advised hospitals and other medical facilities to admit persons with gunshot wounds or related injuries, but to promptly report such cases to the nearest police station.
The command said further developments would be communicated as investigations continue.
