The member representing Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, George Ozodinobi, has raised the alarm over the alleged hijacking of bags of rice meant for free distribution to his constituents.
Ozodinobi, popularly known as Aja Aja Nze, alleged that some individuals diverted the empowerment rice and opened shops where they now sell the items meant to be distributed freely to the people.
According to him, the rice is being sold in Oye Agu, Abagana; Oye Nimo; and Nwagu Agulu.
The lawmaker made the disclosure at the weekend during a massive empowerment programme held at Egwe-Egwe Square, Nimo, where he distributed 52 shuttle buses, 52 tricycles, sewing machines and mini-truck vehicles to beneficiaries drawn from communities in his constituency.
Ozodinobi said,“People are selling my rice meant for my empowerment programme in Oye Agu, Oye Nimo and Nwagu Agulu.”
The federal lawmaker urged beneficiaries of the empowerment at Egwe Egwe Nimo to make good use of the opportunity to build sustainable livelihoods.
“I want to create millionaires from this programme,” he said. “The Igbo are not known for stomach infrastructure but for enterprise. What we are doing here is to empower people to stand on their feet.”
Ozodinobi assured constituents that the exercise would not end with the present distribution, revealing that he plans to replicate the programme on a larger scale within the next six months.
“I will replicate this empowerment programme twice in the next six months. Those who did not benefit today should pray for their turn,” he added.
Highlighting his achievements, the lawmaker said he had installed about 3,320 solar-powered street lights across communities in the constituency.
He also disclosed that he built two-bedroom bungalows for eight widows and constructed a block of six classrooms at Nnamdi Azikiwe Secondary School (NASSA), Abagana, among other projects.
Speaking at the event, the 2027 presidential hopeful of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Peter Obi, commended Ozodinobi for what he described as genuine empowerment of the people.
Obi blamed greed as one of Nigeria’s major challenges, particularly among those entrusted with public resources.
“The trouble with Nigeria is greed. Most people, especially those in government, keep acquiring things that belong to the poor,” Obi said.
He warned that those who continue to exploit the poor would eventually face divine judgment.
The highlight of the event was the posthumous presentation of a shuttle bus to the family of a former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Anambra State, Mr Nathaniel Anigbo, who died recently.
Anigbo, whose remains are still in the morgue, was described as a strong supporter of the Aja Aja Nze movement.
His family representative received the vehicle on his behalf amid emotional scenes at the ceremony.
