~ District Governor vows to focus attention in the area

Rotary International, an international NGO which is focused mostly on fight against polio has decried a rise in mental health cases in Nigeria.

The incoming 8th District Governor of Rotary International District 9142, Prof Au. Nonyelu Nonyelu stated this yesterday during a press conference to herald his installation as District Governor, which will hold on Saturday.

Nonyelu said he will dedicate his tenure as District Governor of Rotary International District 9142 to fight mental health cases, and also ensure membership drive that will help pool resources together for the charity works that Rotary International is known for.

Addressing journalists in Awka, Nonyelu said: “You already know Rotary and her works in the area of polio eradication.

“We’re also working in the area of environment, rural healthcare and many others. One other area you may be surprised at the rise in our society today is mental health issues.

“You may not know that many people in our society today are not normal. You are just seeing everyone and thinking they are normal, but there is a rise in the number of people suffering from mental health issues today.

“That is part of what we will dedicate our time during our tenure to fight. If we succeed in eradicating polio, it is going to be the second biggest wonders of the world, outside the elimination of small pox. Rotary will keep working on interest areas.

“These are our own way of supporting government in growing the economy, given the stagnation we are facing in the country. That is why we think that Rotary cannot be ignored at this point because what we are doing across the world is something huge.”

Speaking on his installation as District Governor on Saturday, Nonyelu said: “Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo will be the guest of honour, 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi will present be the keynote speaker, while Senator Ben Obi will chair the event.

“Obi Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha and Obi Gibson Nwosu, the traditional ruler of Awka kingdom will be the royal fathers of the day.

“Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Adaora Umeoji and business mogul, Tony Okonkwo would receive award during the event.”
