The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Senator Dr. Ugochukwu Uba, has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of over 200 persons in Yelewata village, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, calling for immediate and decisive action from the Federal Government.
Describing the attack as “senseless” and “barbaric,” Uba expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost and urged the government to stop the “carnage and massacre occurring with impunity” across the country.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the SDP chieftain extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the brutality and disregard for human life displayed by the perpetrators of this heinous act,” Uba stated.
“It is imperative that the government put a stop to the carnage and massacre occurring with impunity in our country every day.”
He urged the Federal Government to fulfill its constitutional duty as outlined in Chapter 2, Section 14, Subsections 2(a & b) of the 1999 Constitution by deploying adequate security forces to protect citizens.
“The ceaseless and continuous murder of innocent and helpless citizens is shameful and unacceptable,” he declared, adding that the incident must be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice.
Beyond security deployment, Uba called for the provision of support and compensation for the victims’ families, warning that Nigeria risks descending into a Hobbesian state “where life is short, brutish, and nasty.”
“I stand in solidarity with the people of Benue State and the entire enraged nation during this time of grief,” he said.
Uba urged Nigerians to remain calm but resolute in demanding accountability and security from the government, stressing that justice must prevail not only in Yelewata but in every part of the country where lives and properties are under constant threat.
“May God comfort the families of the victims and grant eternal rest to the departed souls,” he prayed.
