The Senate has reshuffled some of its standing committees, with Senator Victor Umeh now chairing the Senate Committee on National Population and NIMC.

Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District, previously led the Diaspora Committee and NGO.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the changes, praising lawmakers for their commitment during the 2025 budget defence sessions.

Akpabio made the announcement while presiding over the Senate’s resumption on Tuesday after a two-week recess.

Other changes include Abdul Ningi moving from the Population Committee to chair the Senate Committee on FERMA, and Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan taking over as chair of the Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations.

Additional appointments include Senator Garba Maidoki as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development and Joel Thomas as the new Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content.

The Senate also extended condolences to the Speaker of the House of Representatives over the passing of former Deputy Majority Whip Oriyomi Onanuga on January 15.

Akpabio led lawmakers in observing a minute of silence in her honour before adjourning plenary.
