*HEARTY APPRECIATION AND COMPASSIONATE APPEAL*
It is with a heart full of gratitude and a spirit of shared purpose that I write to you on behalf of the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder. For decades, the Tinubu name has been synonymous with compassion, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to uplifting the most vulnerable.
Your efforts in healthcare initiatives have touched lives, particularly for persons living with sickle cell disorder, bringing hope and light where despair and shadows previously loomed.
During my schooling years at the University of Lagos Akoka Yaba, I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the extraordinary generosity of Chief Mrs Remi Tinubu, as then First Lady of Lagos State, who chose to forgo personal celebration in favor of raising over 50 million naira for the National Sickle Cell Foundation Center. The First Lady didn’t just provide funds, she provided hope for countless suffering individuals, directly addressing the pressing issues surrounding sickle cell disorder. That moment left an indelible mark on me, influencing my later standing as a leading voice on sickle cell advocacy.
As the founder of the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder (APLSCD) I am proud to represent a strong advocacy group in the Southeast region of Nigeria. Our organisation has over 750 members, all brave warriors living with sickle cell drawn from the five Igbo speaking States.
In our commitment to the warriors most in need, we founded the first sickle cell orphanage home in Nigeria called, the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home in Agulu, a sanctuary dedicated to providing shelter, succour, and a nurturing environment for orphaned and underprivileged children affected by this disorder. Today, this home accommodates 28 precious children, offering them not just shelter, but a family, education, and the medical care they deserve.
While we are deeply grateful for the recent palliatives received through the City Boy Movement, Anambra State Chapter, we recognize that sustainable change requires more than temporary relief. In the Southeast, we face critical gap in specialized care for sickle cell warriors. We are looking forward to taking more concrete steps towards establishing a permanent Sickle Cell Center which would have a dedicated clinic for immediate treatment, a rehabilitation program for drug abuse because a significant number of warriors have become dependent on opioids such as pentazocine, tramadol, oral-morphine etc, to manage chronic pains. These medications sometimes taken over the counter, has disastrous consequences on the patients, leading to organ failures. With proper rehab support, we could help them reclaim their lives from the grip of addiction, fostering healthier, more independent futures.
During the tenure of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, he used his influence to extend significant assistance to sickle cell groups in northern Nigeria, enabling them to advance their causes and improve lives. Organisations like ours in the Southeast are yet to receive similar benefits, leaving a gap that exacerbates the disparity faced by our community. We believe that with your visionary approach, this imbalance can be rectified, ensuring that no region is left behind in the battle against sickle cell.
In light of the City Boy Movement’s commendable humanitarian agenda for the vulnerable, we humbly hope for your intervention in our plight here in the Southeast. Your support would ignite a wave of change, protect our children, and strengthen our collective stance to show more admiration and respect for the Tinubu’s legacy on health.
Imagine the stories of triumph that could emerge with your assistance –of children growing stronger and better, of families reuniting in hope and breaking free from pain’s chains. Your family history shows that you have the power to make this vision a reality, and we stand readily to partner with you in this noble endeavour.
Thank you Sir for your time, your compassion, and your unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s future. We eagerly await the possibility of your involvement and pray that God gives you the grace, good health and safety.
With deepest respect and hopeful anticipation,
Aisha Edwards Maduagwu,
