Anambra State was spared another violent crime on Christmas night as police foiled an armed robbery in Awka and arrested a suspect following a tense gunpoint struggle.

Officers from the Central Police Station (CPS), Awka, apprehended Nicholas Nweke, recovering a pump-action rifle, five spent cartridges, an Itel mobile phone, and N1,200 in cash.

According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the incident occurred late on December 25, 2025, when police responded promptly to a distress call.

At the scene, officers found the victim grappling with the suspect over the firearm—a brave act that stalled the robbery until police intervened. The suspect was overpowered, disarmed, and arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nweke had demanded the victim’s phone and valuables. When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly fired, injuring two bystanders.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital and are stable, responding to treatment.

SP Ikenga commended the victim’s bravery and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property during the festive season.

The case has been handed to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for thorough investigation.
“Further developments will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.

Residents have hailed the arrest as a reminder of the police’s decisive role in keeping Anambra safe, even against armed criminal threats.
