The Anambra State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria ( SWAN) has expressed happiness with the trajectory of sports development in the state.
The state chairman of the association, Mr Chimezie Anaso stated this in his welcome address on the occasion of 2023 SWAN Week.
Stating that it is not in the character of SWAN to sing the song of government, as the sporting press, Anaso said the association could only promise to continue to commend positive actions and also perform its watchdog role by providing constructive criticisms.
Describing the weekend’s SWAN week as the second part of the association’s annual activity, Anaso said the group had a novelty football match between SWAN members and friends of SWAN.
He said,”This is an annual event which marks end of official activities of the association, it also gives the opportunity to take a hind look at the sports year in the State, Interact among ourselves and with our friends as well as share good moments.
“This is the first of its kind in the life of this leadership under my humble self
It is noteworthy to add that this executive committee was birthed on Oct 3 this year, just two months ago.
“In line with the wave of development in Anambra sports sector, we have carefully chosen a topic titled “Grassroots Approach As Model For Sustainable Sports Development: Anambra State In Focus”
“SWAN is impressed with the trajectory of sports development in Anambra but it is not in our place to sing the song of government, as the sporting press, we can only promise to continue to commend positive actions and also perform our watchdog role by providing constructive criticisms.
“Going forward, as we look forward to the new year, we shall uphold the principles that makes SWAN a professional body, we shall pay attention to capacity building for our members and further entrench ourselves as critical stakeholders in the Anambra sports sector.”
Tony Nezieanya’s lecture, titled: Grassroots Approach As Model For Sustainable Sports Development: Anambra State In Focus,”was delivered on his behalf by Prof Chris Abakare of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
