The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chief Victor Umeh, has been appointed the Chancellor of Tansian University, Anambra State.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Eugene Nwadialor, led a delegation of the institution’s management to Umeh’s residence in Aguluizigbo in the Anaocha Local Area of the state at weekend to present the letter of appointment to the senator.
Speaking, the VC said Umeh’s antecedents and pedigree as a great achiever and dogged fighter for people’s freedom and rights informed his appointment.
He said Umeh had been part of the university as one of the first honorary doctorate degree awardees of Tansian University.
Stating that the university was faith-based institution, founded by the late Prof Johnbosco Akam, the VC said since the demise of Akam, His Eminence Most Reverend Cardinal Peter Okpalaeke had been in the forefront of mentoring the university.
He said Cardinal Okpalaeke had severally acted as the Chairman of Board of Trustees of Tansian University, Visitor and Chancellor of the university; to ensure that the university moved on.
He however stated that the university’s board recently thought it wise that under the separation of functions that the post of the chancellor of the university be given to a worthy son of the soil, stating that it was in that regard that the board did a diligent search and found Umeh worthy of the position.
Speaking, Umeh said it was an honour done him for the university to consider him worthy of the position.
He said he had thought that such positions were the exclusive preserves for revered monarchs like the Obi of Onitsha, Eze Uzu,Awka and so on.
Stating that most public universities had virtually crumbled in every ramification, Umeh said he would endeavour tomake a difference in Tansian University as the Chancellor.
Tansian University (TANU) is located in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area, Anambra State . It is a private Christian University. It started in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area as a temporary site, before the permanent site was set up in Umunya.It was founded by Rev Msgr Prof John Bosco Akam( now late)
