Tension as truck fails brake, hits over 10 vehicles, rams into Anambra park

Accident

No fewer than four persons were injured when a truck carrying a 40-foot container rammed into the Asaba Motor Park, near Oguta Road, by Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was gathered that the incident happened around 11.15 am on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses at the motor park said the truck driver was heading towards the River Niger Bridge before the vehicle had brake failure and while the driver was controlling it, the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the motor park.

The sources said the truck hit over 10 vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna, commercial buses, and tricycles, before finally crashing into the wall of the motor park.

An eyewitness, who gave his name as Chijioke, said, “We were fortunate that the accident did not claim any life. It would have been a serious calamity here today because there were many people at the park waiting to board vehicles.

“They fled as they saw the trailer dragging the other vehicles. Although, four persons who were waiting to board a vehicle were injured and have been rushed to the hospital. The vehicles rammed into them in the process.”

When our correspondent visited the scene of the crash as of 5.55 pm, the crashed vehicles were still seen blocking the ever-busy Oguta Road, thereby causing gridlock as other motorists managed to navigate through the remaining portion of the road.

Sympathisers were also seen around the scene.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Federal Road Safety Corps proved abortive as calls to the telephone line of the acting Sector Public Education Officer of the state command, Margaret Onabe, did not connect at the time of filing this report.
