The RAZOR Short story: The Smiling Snake

Short story

By Tony Okafor

In the small village of Akora, nestled in the heart of the lush forest, Palema was a stunning beauty who turned heads wherever she went.

Her striking features and captivating smile left men entranced, and her intellectual prowess and quick wit only added to her allure. She was a true gem, and everyone in the village knew it.

But Palema’s beauty was matched only by her treachery. She had a notorious reputation for being unable to keep secrets, and her penchant for deceit and manipulation earned her the nickname “the smiling snake.”

It was a name that was whispered in awe and fear, as if speaking it too loudly would summon the snake itself.

Palema’s charm and beauty blinded many to her true nature. She would extract secrets and personal information from those around her with ease, using her wit and charm to disarm even the most cautious of souls.

And once she had what she wanted, she would strike, using the secrets against her victims with deadly precision.

Despite her questionable character, Palema’s beauty and charm made her a magnet for suitors. Men would flock to her like bees to honey, hoping to be the one to tame the dancing snake. But Palema was a master of manipulation, and she would use her charms to get what she wanted, never staying with one man for too long.

Her affairs with Okoro, a wealthy merchant, was known to everyone. Every one would think Okoro would marry her.

But it wasn’t long before Palema’s true nature surfaced. She would flirt with other men, and even stole from her husband to be. The final straw came when she was caught in bed with one of Okoro’s business rivals.

The marriage plans ended in a messy way, with Okoro vowing never to speak to Palema again.

But Palema’s troubles didn’t end there. Her involvement in a series of fraudulent schemes eventually landed her in police.

The shame and disgrace were too much for her mother to bear, and she slumped one afternoon, heartbroken and grief-stricken.

As Palema sat in the police cell, she realized too late that her beauty and charm had been a curse rather than a blessing.

Her inability to change her ways and be truthful had cost her the love and respect of those around her, and ultimately, it had cost her her freedom.

As the years passed, Palema’s beauty began to fade, and her charm lost its luster. She was no longer the captivating beauty she once was, and her manipulative ways had lost their power. She was left alone in her prison cell, with nothing but her regrets to keep her company.

As the months passed, Palema began to see the error of her ways. She realized that her beauty and charm had been a curse, and that her manipulative ways had hurt those she loved. She began to make amends, in small ways at first, but eventually, it was too late. The demons had finished their work in her.
