The Untold Story of Killings in Nawfia/Enugwu Ukwu Land Feud

News

By our reporter

Recently, the communities of Nawfia and Enugwu Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State have been embroiled in a violent land feud, resulting in several deaths and injuries.

An investigation by The Razor Newspaper has uncovered a complex web of deceit, greed, and betrayal at the heart of the conflict.

According to sources, the conflict began when two renegade groups from Enugwu Ukwu and Nawfia partnered to sell and share proceeds from land sales.

However, the Enugwu Ukwu group, known for their illegal land sales and flaunting of wealth, allegedly shortchanged their Nawfia counterparts.

After selling two plots for N170m and N150m, they paid the Nawfia group only N40m, sparking tensions.

Despite warnings to cease land sales, the Enugwu Ukwu group continued, selling another plot for N50m.

This provoked a deadly retaliation from the Nawfia group, who had united with their former rivals to confront them.

Our sources revealed that the victims were aware of the risks, having engaged in shady deals and flaunted their wealth.
One victim had even opened a business near Ezi Elias last Saturday.

The Enugwu Ukwu victims were primarily those involved in illegal land sales, with some community members distancing themselves from the conflict.

“Only Enugwu Ukwu people who didn’t know about the dirty deal would dabble into the case,” our source said, adding, “Those guys would do dirty deals and live big.”

The conflict has exposed a complex web of deceit, greed, and betrayal, with both groups engaging in illegal activities.

The Nawfia group, already divided over a leadership tussle, united against the Enugwu Ukwu group after feeling cheated.

In a recent development, leaders of Nawfia, comprising Chiefs Daniel Okoye and Sir Daniel Obelle, issued a joint statement condemning the recent violence in the Agu Anaocha axis of Ifite Nawfia, which resulted in the loss of lives and injuries on September 9, 2024.

The leaders strongly denounced the use of violence to settle disputes and described the incident as an “abomination of the highest order.”

They emphasized that Nawfia town values peace and dialogue, and its people are law-abiding citizens who believe in due process.
