Gunmen in their numbers Saturday night engaged Anambra state Joint Security Forces in a fierce gun battle where two persons lost their lives and others injured

The encounter took place at Amaokpala, Orimba North local government area of the state

In the process, one of the kidnapped victims, a 26 year old female was rescued

It gathered that one of the hoodlums was killed by the security forces, while another security operative was also killed by the hoodlums

A source said others from both ends were seriously injured during the gun battle.

However, confirming the report, the state Police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, an Superintendent of Police, said only one of the hoodlums was killed

He equally, confirmed the rescue of the female kidnap victim by the security operatives, and recovery of ammunition and charms among others

Ikenga said, “During the operation, the operatives successfully rescued a 26 year old female kidnap victim, neutralized one of the armed criminals, and recovered the following items;

“One pump-action gun, 11 (eleven) live cartridges, One ash-coloured Toyota Camry Sedan with Reg. No: Lagos-EPE-208-FK, One Police belt, One carton of Chelsea sachet alcoholic drink, One Zenith Bank ATM card, One axe” among others

“The hoodlums allegedly opened fire upon sighting the patrol team. The operatives tactically returned fire, leading to a gun duel that lasted approximately forty (40) minutes.

“One suspect was fatally wounded and later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital, where the body was deposited in the morgue for preservation he said

He said the Commissioner of Police,Ikioye Orutugu, had commended the gallant efforts of the operatives, while reaffirming the Command’s unwavering commitment to making Anambra State inimical to all forms of criminal activity.
