The Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has nominated three candidates for the position of Acting Vice Chancellor, this is coming amidst amidst age controversy.
The current Acting VC, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu, whose tenure ends on May 19, 2025, is reportedly vying for the substantive role.
However, to comply with Federal Ministry of Education guidelines, he would need to step aside, as the guidelines stipulate that Acting VCs cannot apply for the substantive position while in office.
Recently, the Council directed Ikechebelu to convene a Senate meeting to nominate five persons, from which the Council would scrutinize and appoint one as the new Acting VC.
Following this directive, the Senate met and nominated three candidates: Prof AU Nnonyelu, Prof Carol Arinze Umobi, and Prof Ada Sam Omenyi.
According to the the Federal Ministry of Education criteria, nominees must be former Deputy Vice Chancellors (DVCs) and above 65 years old, which aligns with the Ministry’s guidelines.
The Council is scheduled to meet soon to appoint one of the three recommended candidates.
Until then, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu will remain the Acting VC, handing over to the newly appointed individual once the process is complete.
The appointment process is expected to follow Ministry guidelines promoting transparency, equity, and fairness.
