Anambra govt. plans child morbidity, mortality reduction week

The Anambra state government has assured the reduction of neonatal, maternal, child morbidity and mortality rate with quality health service delivery in the state.
Dr Joe Akabuike, Commissioner for Health made the disclosure to newsmen in Awka on Thursday.
He said that the state government had planned first round maternal, newborn and child health week from June 29 to July 3 for preventative routine services in the primary health care centres and outreach mechanism.
He said that it was aimed at improving immunization coverage of routine vaccines, vitamin A, long lasting insecticide nets and other child survival interventions for children 6 to 59 months.
Akabuike said that the three key interventions for the last round  of November 2014 was vitamin A 97 per cent, iron folate 34 per cent and  albendazole (De-worming) 32 per cent.
He said that ten rounds of routine immunization had been implemented successfully in the state since the approval of bi-annual maternal newborn and child health week in May/June and November/December every year by the National Council on Health at Asaba in 2010.
According to him, the exercise would hold in all government health care centres and other designated posts, pointing out that the vaccines are free and safe.
The commissioner urged the caregivers to avail themselves of the opportunity to ensure their children receive the interventions, while also calling on the pregnant and women of child bearing age to visit the health facilities to assess health care services.
