Over 1,000 athletes to participate in Anambra marathon

Over 1,000 athletes will on Saturday participate in a 42 kilometer marathon being organized by an NGO, Thanos Charity Foundation.

The coordinator of the organisation, Mr Ifeanyi Ugochukwu who addressed journalists in Awka said the starting point for the marathon is All Saints Cathedral in Onitsha, and would terminate at Emmaus House in Awka.

He said: “The idea behind the event is to develop sports in Anambra State, help the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo who is seeking to develop all sectors, by using the marathon to grow athletes who will represent the state in future competitions.

“We are fully prepared for the event, and we have held meetings with security agencies and the Federal Road Safety Corps. We have made arrangements for ambulance to ensure the safety of the participating athletes.”

He said the marathon will start by 7am on Saturday, and that the management Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi will be sending medical personnel for the event.
