The RAZOR Short Story: Behind The Church

Column

By Tony Okafor

In the bustling St. Louis Church, Onyeuka was a paragon of devotion. Every Sunday, he arrived before dawn, Bible in hand, ready to lead the congregation in worship. His unwavering dedication earned him great respect from the priest and the community.

Onyeuka’s fervor was inspiring, and he often led prayers and participated in church functions with unbridled enthusiasm. The priest hailed him as a true servant of God, and many sought to emulate his example.

Onyeuka’s commitment to his faith was unwavering, or so it seemed. He would often lead prayers and participate in church functions with zeal, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.

The priest would often praise him, holding him up as an example of a true servant of God.

But behind the scenes, a different narrative unfolded. Onyeuka’s motives were not entirely altruistic.

He had a secret: he was deeply in love with Eliza, the wife of Mr. Odika. Odika was la nominal churchgoer who didn’t share Onyeuka’s enthusiasm for religious activities.

Eliza, a woman of grace and beauty, held a prominent position in the church as a choire mistress. Onyeuka’s admiration for her began innocently enough, but soon blossomed into a full-blown obsession.

He would often find excuses to be near her, volunteering for tasks that would bring him closer to her.

As time passed, Onyeuka’s facade of righteousness began to crack. He would often make excuses to skip church functions, only to be found lurking in the shadows, watching Eliza from afar. His love for her had become an all-consuming fire, driving him to abandon his moral compass.

Meanwhile, the church community remained oblivious to Onyeuka’s secret life. They continued to praise him, unaware of the hypocrisy that lay beneath his pious exterior. The priest, too, was deceived, entrusting Onyeuka with important responsibilities within the church.

Onyeuka and Eliza’s secret affair continued to blossom, with them finding excuses to spend time together. They would often take weekend trips to nearby cities, hiding their true intentions from their spouses and the church community.

As their relationship deepened, they began to plan more elaborate getaways.
They thought they were being careful, covering their tracks and keeping their secret safe from prying eyes.

But, as the saying goes, “you can’t hide the truth forever.” Their love affairs didn’t go unnoticed, and rumours began to circulate about Onyeuka’s unholy affairs

Onyeuka’s world began to unravel when Mr. Odika discovered his secret. A confrontation ensued, and Onyeuka’s reputation would have left in tatters, but the priest continued to cover him for reasons only him and Onyeuka, and Eliza knew.

The church community was shocked and dismayed by the revelation. They had been blinded by Onyeuka’s outward displays of piety, failing to see the rot that lay beneath.

At a point, the priest, too, was left reeling, wondering how he had been so deceived.

In the end, Onyeuka’s hypocrisy was laid bare for all to see. His mask of righteousness had been torn off, revealing a man consumed by his own desires.

The church community was left to pick up the pieces, realizing too late that true holiness cannot be measured by outward appearances alone.

The story of Onyeuka serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us that true faith is not about outward displays of devotion but about the sincerity of our hearts. May we learn to look beyond the masks we wear and seek the truth that lies within.

The moral of the story is that hypocrisy will eventually be exposed, and true character will be revealed.
