Independence Day: A Call to Action for Unity, Equality, and Accountability – Ibieorutomwen

Dr. Isoken Ibieorutomwen, Founder of Women Supporting Women in Politics Network, CEO Isk Production and Isk Consulting said as we mark another Independence Day, we are reminded of the arduous journey that has shaped our nation—a journey built on the sacrifices, courage, and dreams of those who dared to challenge the status quo in pursuit of freedom.

She said: “Today, we celebrate more than our hard-won independence; we honor the resilience and indomitable spirit that bind us together as a people.

“Yet, as we reflect on our progress, we must confront the deep challenges that threaten our collective future.

“Corruption continues to undermine our institutions, inequality persists as a glaring injustice, and division festers, leaving scars on the nation’s fabric.

“These are not just inconveniences but serious roadblocks to the bright future we seek. If we are to realize the true promise of independence, we must address these issues with unflinching honesty and resolve. Now is the time for action.

“We must ask ourselves if we are ready to build a society where every citizen, regardless of background, can thrive, and if we are prepared to reject the forces of hate and exclusion that divide us. Unity is not a mere slogan—it is our lifeline, and our diversity is not a weakness but our greatest strength.

“Equally important is the fight against corruption, a cancer that threatens everything our forebears fought for. Progress will remain elusive unless we demand full accountability from those in power. Transparency is not optional; it is essential to building the future we aspire to.

“Moreover, it is time to place women at the forefront of national leadership. The potential of this nation will never be fully realized if we continue to marginalize half of our population. It’s not enough to open doors for women; we must empower them to lead boldly and contribute their unique insights to shaping our nation’s future.

“On this Independence Day, let us not only commemorate the past but commit to building a future that is just, inclusive, and defined by the courage to tackle our greatest challenges. Only by doing so can we truly honor the sacrifices that gave birth to this nation and move toward a brighter, more equitable tomorrow for all.”
