EDITORIAL: Prof Soludo, Tame Ndi Aka Odo

Editorial

By Tony Okafor

The Special Anambra Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), now known as Ndi Aka Odo, was established with the laudable objective of eliminating criminal activities like one-chance robbery, drug abuse, and extortion in Anambra State.

However, the unit’s modus operandi has raised serious concerns about human rights violations, leaving a trail of brutality and abuse in their wake.

The allegations are disturbing and warrant immediate attention.

Victims have reported spinal cord damage, while women have been manhandled and molested for something as trivial as not wearing a bra.

These actions are unacceptable and undermine the very purpose of the SASA unit.

It is imperative that the government ensures that those entrusted with maintaining law and order do not become lawbreakers themselves.

As the governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has a responsibility to address these allegations and ensure that the SASA operatives and allied workers operate within the confines of the law.

The governor must remind them that a suspect in any crime or offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

It is essential that the governor takes concrete steps to reform the SASA unit, ensuring that they are trained to respect human rights and follow due process.

Furthermore, the governor must investigate these allegations of human rights violation thoroughly and hold perpetrators accountable, regardless of their position or affiliation.

This includes ensuring that those responsible for the abuses are brought to justice and that victims receive adequate compensation.

Ultimately, the success of the SASA unit depends on its ability to operate within the bounds of the law and respect human rights.

Soludo must take decisive action to tame Ndi Aka Odo and restore the trust of the people in the unit.

The governor must remember that the rule of law and respect for human rights are essential to maintaining a just and peaceful society.

By taking concrete steps to address these allegations and reform the SASA unit, Governor Soludo can demonstrate his commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring that the people of Anambra State are protected and served by those entrusted with maintaining law and order.
