Stakeholders in Anambra state have blamed the Standard organization of Nigeria, SON, for the incessant building collapse in the country.
They claim that agency has abandoned it’s duty of monitoring substandard materials in the markets.
The attacks came when National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, hosted stakeholders at Maxbe hotels in Awka, during the a Strategic Focus Group meeting on Made-in Nigeria Products, ” themed: ‘ Made in Nigeria’ for Everyone
•
Representative of SON,Engr. Wariboko Fidelis, had tongue lashed local Manufacturers for not carrying SON along in their businesses, there by producing substandard materials
He said, the meeting reinforced NASENI’s mission to champion innovation, strengthen local industries, and position Nigeria’s manufacturing sector for global competitiveness.
But the chairman of Nigeria Society of Engineers, Awka branch, Engr, Maryjane Oluchi Okoli, chided SON for the number of building collapse in the country for what she described as negligence of duty
According to her, ” how many times have you gone to the markets to check the rods being displayed in the market which are substandard.
“People are using 12 and half mm rods in place of 16mm rods, adding that what flooded the markets are 12mm rods and not 16mm.
All the building collapse in this state and indeed Nigeria are being caused as a result of SON not performing it’s duties adequately.
Engr Maryjane, was one of the panelists during the NASENI stakeholders meeting
For Dr Oluwaseyi Ogungbenro of ELDI in Awka,” NASENI is calling on the people to patronize Made in Nigeria products. That is what NASENI is all about and we will continue taking the lead”
