Panic and heartbreak have gripped Mgbakwu community in Awka North LGA of Anambra State as over 300 families have been left homeless following a ferocious flood that tore through the area, destroying homes, farmlands, and livelihoods.
The angry floodwaters, said to descend with violent force during every rainfall, originate from Amede, Amakeze, Otulu, and Onaga villages, surging through Njikoka-Amankpu and crashing into Eke-Agba in neighboring Isuanaocha.
Residents say the flood has swallowed over 3.2 kilometers of land, displacing hundreds and bringing life to a standstill.
During a damage assessment visit, Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Sir Felix Odumegwu, expressed shock and concern, blaming the devastation on poor planning and a complete lack of drainage infrastructure.
Speaking through his aide, Mr. Emmanuel John-Bosco, the commissioner acknowledged that Mgbakwu sits on a natural flood path, making the area highly vulnerable.
He assured residents that Governor Chukwuma Soludo will be briefed immediately for urgent intervention.
Community leader, Hon. Basil Nwokeoma-Chukwu, said the disaster has plagued Mgbakwu for a decade, escalating every year. “This flood is about to wipe out Amankpu village, and our people have lost everything,” he cried.
For residents like Mr. Chris Igboamalu and Mr. Obiadinma Nnebeive, the nightmare is real. “Each rainfall is a tragedy,” they lamented, begging both state and federal governments to rescue them from further suffering. “We are losing our homes, our farms, and our future.”
As the waters rise, so does the fear. The people of Mgbakwu are sending out a desperate SOS to the world—they need help, and they need it now.
