Soludo Has Impoverished Us, Anambra Minimum Wage Fake — Workers Cry Out

By Our Correspondent

Some civil servants in Anambra State have cried out over what they described as worsening hardship under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, alleging that his policies have impoverished them and rendered the state’s minimum wage a sham.

The workers, whose identities have been withheld for fear of witch-hunt and victimisation, lamented that almost all the welfare packages and privileges extended to them by previous administrations have been withdrawn, leaving them to struggle for survival.

Speaking at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, the workers decried that even the current minimum wage, which they described as “grossly inadequate,” was not properly computed.

They also bemoaned the lack of access to suitable accommodation and the absence of any transportation allowance or scheme, saying that the situation has further burdened them with escalating fuel and transport costs.

They recalled that former Governor Willie Obiano had provided buses to ease workers’ transportation challenges, but that the vehicles disappeared from the roads shortly after Governor Soludo assumed office.

The aggrieved workers further alleged that merit was not considered in the recent appointment of permanent secretaries in the state civil service.

“In the current appointment of Permanent Secretaries, there were no considerations to the due cadre,” one of them said, a view which others corroborated.

They also decried the growing politicisation of the civil service, accusing political appointees of interfering with their official duties, thereby undermining established administrative structures and procedures.

In addition, they expressed dismay over the lack of periodic training and capacity-building programmes for civil servants in the state.

They argued that as the backbone of governance and the machinery that powers public administration, workers deserved regular training to enhance efficiency and productivity.

The workers, however, appealed to Governor Soludo to urgently look into their plight, saying that addressing these issues would restore fairness, boost morale, and promote effective service delivery across the state.
