Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has hailed Spain’s victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the triumph is clear proof that young people can achieve extraordinary results when they are trusted with responsibility.
Reacting to the end of the tournament in a statement on Monday, Obi said Spain’s success should serve as a wake-up call for Nigeria and other countries to invest more in their youths instead of sidelining them.
According to him, the World Cup showcased the power of competence, character, capacity and leadership among young people.
“Today, competence, capacity, character and capability were on full display. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are properly nurtured, entrusted with responsibility and given the opportunity to lead, they deliver outstanding results,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor urged Nigerian leaders to adopt the same approach across every sector of the country’s development.
“This is the spirit we must replicate across every sector of our national life. A New Nigeria is Possible, and it must be reflected in every endeavour that brings pride, progress and honour to our nation,” he added.
Obi also described the successful conclusion of the Mundial as “yet another fitting birthday gift,” expressing excitement over the quality of football and the emergence of young stars who dazzled throughout the competition.
Spain’s victorious squad was powered by several exciting young players, including 19-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, whose outstanding performances underlined the country’s long-term commitment to youth development.
The European champions crowned an impressive campaign by edging Argentina 1-0 in the final, conceding only one goal throughout the 48-day tournament jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
