The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Branch, has commenced an indefinite withdrawal of academic and administrative services over the non-payment of the complete salary of its members for August 2026.

The decision was taken at the Branch Congress held on Monday, September 7, 2026, in Awka, where members resolved to activate the standing resolution of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC) on the principle of “No Pay, No Work.”

According to the Branch, the ASUU-NEC resolution empowers branches to withdraw their services where salaries are not paid by the third day of the succeeding month.

The Union noted that as of Monday, September 7, the University had yet to pay the complete August 2026 salary to its academic staff, making the situation a recurring experience for members.

ASUU-NAU stressed that the decision to withdraw its services was based solely on the non-payment of the complete August salary, describing the situation as frustrating and unacceptable.

The Branch consequently called on the University authorities and the Visitor to the University, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently intervene and ensure the immediate payment of the outstanding portion of the August salary.

The Union further appealed for measures to prevent a recurrence of what it described as an “ugly experience” for its members.

Consequently, the Congress directed all members of ASUU-NAU to immediately withdraw their academic and administrative services, with the action to remain in force until the complete August 2026 salary is paid to all affected members.

The Branch leadership reaffirmed that the action was necessitated by the need to protect the legitimate welfare and entitlements of its members and to draw urgent attention to the recurring salary-payment challenge.

The statement was signed by Comrade Innocent Nnubia, Chairperson, ASUU-NAU Branch, and Comrade Osita Nnajiofor, Secretary.
