Peter Obi Urges Better Welfare for Serving, Retired Military Personnel

News

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for improved welfare for serving and retired military personnel, stressing that the nation’s gratitude to those who defend it must go beyond ceremonies and tributes.

Obi made the call in a message marking the burial of Lieutenant General Isaac Obiakor (Rtd.) in Awka, Anambra State, while reflecting on a difficult week for the Nigerian Army, following the loss of soldiers in an aircraft crash and another helicopter crash.

He described the incidents as painful reminders of the sacrifices Nigerian military personnel make in the service of the country.

According to him, retired military personnel deserve timely pensions, accessible healthcare, decent housing and the support necessary to live their retirement years in dignity and peace. He added that their families should be assured that their sacrifices have not been forgotten.

Obi also emphasised the need to prioritise the welfare of serving personnel by providing adequate equipment, proper training, effective medical care and the necessary support to enable them to perform their duties safely and effectively.

“Patriotism must go beyond ceremonies and tributes. It must be reflected in the practical care we provide for those who serve and those who have served,” he said.

He added that those who defend the nation deserve a country that, in return, protects their dignity and well-being.

Obi prayed for the peaceful repose of General Obiakor, comfort for his family and divine protection for serving military personnel. He also extended his condolences to families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty.
