Chip off the old block: Gloria Ezenwanne’s gift in Nonye Soludo

There are mothers whose greatest legacy is what they leave behind. And then there are mothers whose legacy continues to live, quietly and unmistakably, in the character of the children they raised. Mrs. Gloria Ezenwanne (Mmiliguluegu) belonged to the latter.

To understand the woman Nonye Soludo has become, one only needs to listen to the people who knew her mother from way back. The tributes that continue to emerge about Mrs. Ezenwanne paint the portrait of a remarkable woman: a teacher, an administrator, a disciplinarian, a mentor, a giver and, above all, a woman with an unusually generous heart. She was remembered as a “perfect disciplinarian”, a “teacher of teachers” and an “all-round disciplinarian”. But behind that firmness was a kindness that people have not forgotten decades later.

One woman recalled how, while serving as her boss at the State Education Board, Mrs. Ezenwanne repeatedly granted her permission to travel so she could return home for “Ọmụgwọ”. Another remembered how she helped facilitate her transfer from Ugbenu in Awka North back to Isuofia after she had spent about 12 years there. These were not grand gestures. They were ordinary acts of humanity. Yet they became extraordinary because of the difference they made in people’s lives.

Former students and people who crossed her path still remember her generosity. One recalled how she supported him during his time at Federal Polytechnic Oko. Another remembered receiving beautiful handbags and wristwatches whenever she returned from the United Kingdom. A former seminarian remembered staying in her home during his six-week apostolic work in 2005 and said she made sure he lacked nothing. This is perhaps the most revealing thing about Mrs. Ezenwanne. People do not remember only the position she occupied. They remember how she made them feel.

She was an Education Secretary in the old Aguata local government area, but her influence clearly went beyond an office. She was a mother figure to many, a source of counsel to others and a woman whose sense of responsibility extended beyond the requirements of her job. She could be firm without being cruel. She could command respect without withholding kindness. She could insist on discipline while still making room for compassion.

And perhaps this is where her greatest legacy becomes visible. In Nonye Soludo. The woman Anambra has come to know for her compassion, her insistence on healthy living, her concern for women and children, her generosity towards vulnerable families and her deep belief that leadership must touch ordinary lives appears to have inherited something much more valuable than a name from her mother. She inherited a way of seeing people compassionately.

Mrs. Gloria Ezenwanne believed that leadership came with a responsibility to help others. Nonye has carried that philosophy into her own public life, creating initiatives that place dignity, health, nutrition, empowerment and wellbeing at the centre of her work. Her mother’s firmness can be seen in her discipline. Her generosity can be seen in her compassion. Her concern for people can be seen in the causes she champions. Her commitment to service can be seen in the consistency with which she continues to work for communities.

Perhaps that is why the most fitting tribute to Mrs. Gloria Ezenwanne is not simply that she was a great teacher. She was a great mother. She raised a woman whose life continues to reflect many of the values she embodied. Mrs. Gloria Ezenwanne may no longer walk among us today, but the evidence of her life remains everywhere. In the people she helped, in the students she shaped, in the families she touched, in the memories people still recount, and in the daughter who continues to carry her values into our world.

Some gems are treasured because of how brightly they shine. Others are treasured because they make everything around them shine. Mrs. Gloria Ezenwanne was that kind of gem. And in Nonye Soludo, a part of her continues to shine. May God continue to rest her amazing soul. Amen.
