In a move to sanitize the housing sector and restore credibility to property transactions, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the second reading of the Anambra State Real Estate Agents and Developers Regulatory Agency Bill, 2025.
The bill, sponsored by Hon. Nonso Atuchukwu, who represents Nnewi South 1 state constituency, seeks to establish a regulatory agency tasked with overseeing the operations of estate agents and property developers across the state. According to Hon. Atuchukwu, the proposed agency would ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in land and real estate dealings.
“The essence of this bill is to create a structured and credible framework for regulating real estate activities in Anambra. It is designed to protect the interests of landowners, developers, and prospective buyers alike,” he stated during the debate on the floor of the House.
The bill received widespread support from lawmakers, including the Majority Leader and member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, Hon. Ejike Okechukwu (Anaocha Two), Barr. Patrick Okafor (Onitsha North Two), Hon. Tony Muobike (Aguata Two), and Hon. Golden Iloh (Ihiala Two).
They all emphasized that the legislation would curb the menace of fake agents, reduce cases of land disputes and abandoned properties, and bring order to the booming but largely unregulated real estate sector.
Describing the bill as timely and transformational, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, lauded the initiative as a key step toward meeting the housing needs of Ndi Anambra and modernizing estate development in the state.
The bill has been committed to the House Committees on Lands and Judiciary for further legislative scrutiny and refinement.
