BREAKING: Anambra Disowns Enugwu-Agidi Town Union Election

The Anambra State Government has disowned the purported election of the Enugwu-Agidi Brotherhood Union (EBU), held on October 17, 2026, urging the community to maintain peace pending further directives from the government.

The government, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, said it neither approved nor participated in the election, which produced Chief Chukwuebuka Onuorah as President-General of the union.

The position was contained in a letter dated October 19, 2026, addressed to the traditional ruler of Enugwu-Agidi in Njikoka Local Government Area, Igwe Michael Okekeuche.

The letter, signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nwabufo Nwankwo, on behalf of the Commissioner, followed a request for government intervention to halt the election, conveyed in a letter dated October 16, 2026.

Expressing concern over the planned election, the ministry urged the traditional ruler to ensure that peace prevailed in the community to prevent any development capable of triggering a crisis.

“Your community remains peaceful to avoid a situation capable of breeding crisis as you await further Government’s directive,” the letter stated.

The government’s position comes against the backdrop of a legal dispute over the leadership of the Enugwu-Agidi Brotherhood Union.

Recall that Justice Etomike Ndigwe of a court in Anambra State, on September 25, 2026, nullified the EBU election held on December 29, 2025, on the grounds that it was not conducted in accordance with the community’s constitution.

The court consequently ordered the conduct of a fresh election within 90 days of the judgment.

Chief Onuorah emerged President-General in the October 17 election, which followed the court’s nullification of the previous exercise.

However, the state government’s latest position has cast uncertainty over the status of the election, with the community now expected to await further directives from the relevant authorities.
