Editorial

By Tony Okafor

As Anambra State prepares for the November 8 governorship election, the stage is set for party primaries that will determine the fate of the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has outlined a clear timeline for the primaries, slated to hold between March and April.

It is imperative that major political parties in the state conduct primaries that are transparent, free, and fair.

The forthcoming primaries present a unique opportunity for political parties to demonstrate their commitment to democratic principles.

To achieve this, parties must provide a level playing field for all aspirants, ensuring that the most qualified candidates emerge to contest the governorship election.

This can only be achieved by preventing the hijack of party tickets by individuals who may not have the best interests of the party or the people at heart.

Past experiences have shown that party primaries can be fraught with challenges, including the imposition of candidates, monetization of the process, and violence.

To avoid a repeat of these ugly scenarios, parties must establish clear guidelines and rules for the primaries, ensuring that all aspirants are given equal opportunities to participate.

Parties must also ensure that their delegates are not induced or coerced into voting for particular candidates for financial gain or personal benefits.

Furthermore, parties must prioritize the interests of the people of Anambra State, rather than those of selfish politicians.

This can be achieved by conducting primaries that are transparent, inclusive, and accountable.

As the people of Anambra State await the outcome of the party primaries, it is essential that they remain vigilant and demand transparency and accountability from the parties.

The media, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders must also play their part in ensuring that the primaries are conducted in a free and fair manner.

Ultimately, the success of the party primaries depends on the commitment of all stakeholders to democratic principles.

By conducting primaries that are transparent, free, and fair, parties can ensure that the most qualified candidates emerge to contest the governorship election, and that the people of Anambra State are given a credible choice for their next governor.
