EDITORIAL: Why Did Anambra’s Security Nosedive After CP Aderemi Adeoye’s Retirement?

By Tony Okafor

The alarming decline in security in Anambra State just a few months after CP Aderemi Adeoye’s retirement demands urgent attention.

Human rights activist Osita Obi poignantly asks, “What magic did CP Aderemi Adeoye use during his era?”

The contrast between Adeoye’s acclaimed tenure and the current chaos is staggering.

The recent gruesome attacks in Nibo, where 16 innocent lives were reportedly lost, and Ifite, where 8 lives were brutally taken, within a 4-day span in the state capital, raise deeply disturbing questions.

How did perpetrators bypass multiple police checkpoints undetected? Were these checkpoints mere decorations or were they compromised?

The Anambra State Police Command bears responsibility for these glaring security lapses.

CP Aderemi Adeoye’s tenure was marked by numerous accolades and awards from various sectors of Anambra society, including traditional institutions.

His leadership and strategies brought a sense of security and hope to the people. Now, that sense of security has vanished, replaced by fear and uncertainty.

It’s unacceptable for the command to become a dumping ground for retiring officers seeking personal gain. This culture undermines the very fabric of law enforcement and erodes public trust.

How can such heinous attacks occur without any prior warning or detection? The lack of effective policing has emboldened criminals, making Anambra State a haven for lawlessness.

We urge the police hierarchy to take immediate action. Investigate and address corruption within the command. Ensure officers prioritize citizen safety over extortion.

Enhance intelligence gathering and surveillance capabilities. Restore the public’s trust in the police.

The truth must be told; the Anambra State Police Command must work for its people, not against them.

CP Aderemi Adeoye’s success story serves as a beacon of hope.

His “magic” was effective leadership, community engagement, and a commitment to justice. Let us learn from his example and reclaim Anambra State from the clutches of insecurity.

Adeoye’s leadership style was characterized by openness and approachability. He dismantled hierarchical barriers, creating a culture of inclusivity and direct engagement with his personnel and the public.

The Anambra State Police Command must awaken to its responsibilities and work tirelessly to restore peace and security to the state.
Anything less is unacceptable. The time for change is now.
