The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze has extolled the glowing qualities of Nigeria’s first female governor, Dame Virgy Etiaba, stating that she made significant history by being the first female Governor in Nigeria and Africa at large.
In his birthday message to Dame Virgy on behalf of the State Legislature, Rt.Hon.Udeze noted that Dame Virgy Etiaba’s tenure of one hundred days as Governor was impactful, adding that she awarded and completed many road projects, rehabilitated schools and hospitals, cleared backlog of pensions and gratuities in addition to being the first Governor in Nigeria to sign the Child Rights Bill into law.
The Speaker’s felicitations which was made available to our correspondent by his SSA/Chief Press Secretary, Emma Madu, recollected the events that led to Etiaba’s emergence as Governor, and how she refused to be sworn in as Governor but later accepted after a passionate appeal to her by the Anambra Leaders of Thought to save the State from political quagmire.
He praised her for her commitment, humility and motherly love which she brought to bear in the discharge of her duties as Governor of Anambra State, hence the name, Mama Anambra.
Rt.Hon.Udeze maintained that Dame Virgy’s contributions to the growth and development of Anambra State are legendary and called on other women to emulate her sterling attributes.
The Speaker prayed God to continue to bless former Governor, Dame Virgy in all ramifications and grant her longevity and good health to be able to carry on with her mentorship and service to God and humanity.
Before becoming governor, Dame Etiaba worked as a teacher and headmistress for 35 years and founded Bennet Etiaba Memorial Schools in Nnewi .
