Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated N10 million to support the renovation of the Mother of Christ Specialist Hospital in Enugu State after parts of the facility were destroyed by fire.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, presented the cheque to the hospital management during a visit to assess the extent of damage caused by the inferno.
The hospital, owned by the Reverend Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of the Catholic Church, suffered significant damage, including its Children’s Ward, which was among the sections inspected by the former governor.
Speaking during the visit, Obi praised the hospital management for their commitment to healthcare delivery despite the challenges they face.
He described healthcare and education as two of the most important needs of society and encouraged the management not to be discouraged by what he termed a lack of appreciation for their sacrifices.
Obi assured the hospital authorities of his continued support and commended their dedication to serving humanity.
Accompanying him on the visit were former Commissioner for Housing and his former Chief of Staff, Prof. Stella Okunna, Prof. Patrick Obi, and his former Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Valentine Obienyem.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the hospital, the Chief Medical Director, Rev. Sister Dr. Maria Nkiruka Okafor, described Obi as a rare politician with a genuine concern for humanity.
She disclosed that the N10 million had already been paid into the hospital’s account and revealed that Obi personally contacted her after learning about the fire disaster to pledge support for the rebuilding effort.
Rev. Sister Okafor prayed for God’s blessings upon Obi and expressed hope that he would realise his ambition of becoming Nigeria’s president and transforming the country.
