The Senate has taken steps to immortalize the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
The decision followed a motion sponsored by Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), and co-sponsored by Senators Osita Izunaso, Orji Uzor Kalu, Mohammed Monguno, among others.
The motion was adopted during a recent plenary session marked by tributes to Anaekwe’s statesmanship and legacy.
In honour of the deceased, the Senate observed a minute’s silence and constituted a delegation to condole with the Anaekwe family.
The upper chamber also resolved to collaborate with the House of Representatives and the family of the late Speaker to ensure a befitting state burial.
Furthermore, the Senate urged the Federal Government to name a national institution or public edifice after the late Anaekwe as a permanent mark of respect for his service to the nation.
Anaekwe, who served as Speaker in the short-lived Third Republic, was widely praised for his integrity, legislative acumen, and commitment to democratic ideals.
