About two persons suspected to be cultists were on Friday allegedly gunned down in Awka, the Anambra State capital, during a clash by rival cult groups.

An eyewitness, Mr Ike Odi said the attack took place at about 11am at Ukwuoji bus stop, along Zik’s Avenue.

He said that the hoodlums numbering about five invaded the area in a tinted glass car, and shot down their victims and thereafter shot indiscriminately into the air, before they escaped.

“We were all there when it happened, and immediately gunshots started going up in the air, everyone scampered for safety, and the cultists used the opportunity to escape,” Odi said.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not confirm the killing of anyone, but admitted that there was shooting in the area.

He said: “There is no information like that before me. Police operatives have intensified patrols within Awka following the sound of gunshot at Ukwuoji bus stop in Awka.

“Information gather at the scene from the eyewitnesses shows it is cult related,” he added.
