The recent surge in kidnappings by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Awka, Anambra State’s capital, has eroded confidence in the state government, police, and security operatives.
The once-peaceful Dubai Estate area is now a danger zone, leaving residents in a state of panic.
The kidnappers’ audacity, operating with impunity, is a damning indictment of the security apparatus.
Six individuals have been abducted, with two forced to pay N75 million in ransom.
The brazen crimes, including the abduction of a professor and a young couple, who paid N31 million and N45 million respectively, demonstrate the kidnappers’ lack of fear for authorities.
Eyewitnesses describe the kidnappers as ruthless, with one victim’s car shot at and set ablaze during an attempted escape.
The police’s assurances of investigation ring hollow, given victims’ reluctance to come forward. This lack of trust indicates systemic failure.
We demand immediate action from the state government, police, and security operatives, including: increasing patrols and surveillance in affected areas; engaging with residents to build trust and encouraging victims to come forward and addressing the root causes of these kidnappings.
Awka, as the seat of government, should be a beacon of security and safety. The current situation is unacceptable and demands urgent attention.
We will not tolerate a situation where residents live in fear. Authorities must rise to the occasion and restore peace and security to Awka.
Anything less is a dereliction of duty.
