Why 26 out of 30 Anambra lawmakers passed ANSIEC Law – Speaker

News

The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, has clarified the reasons behind the unanimous passage of the ANSIEC law amendment by the State Assembly.

According to Udeze, the amendment was necessary due to the fact that local government elections have not been held in the state for over ten years, rendering certain sections of the law outdated.

“The State Assembly is constitutionally empowered to make laws for the conduct of local government elections and general administration of councils,” Udeze explained.

He added,”We amended the ANSIEC law to suit current realities and ensure the smooth running of the 21 local government areas in the state.”

Udeze dismissed reports of crisis in the State Assembly as “unfounded and diversionary,” noting that 26 out of 30 lawmakers supported the amendment due to its merits.

He commended his colleagues for prioritizing the people’s interest and assured that the Assembly is committed to making laws that benefit Ndi Anambra.

Udeze also emphasized the independence of the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly, stating that it is not under the influence or control of any organ or authority.

He expressed confidence in the Assembly’s ability to make significant contributions to the peace and development of Anambra State.
