Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, has urged the state Commissioner of Police to fully recover the state from criminals.
Mefor made this call during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police,Nnaghe Obono Itam, to familiarize and share ideas on improving the current security situation in the state.
At the Police Commissioner’s office in Amawbia, Mefor emphasized the importance of profiling and adequate training of vigilante operatives by the police.
“This will enable prompt and proper flow of information and help build their general orientation to effectively discharge their duties,” he said.
“Undergoing training by the police will build their capacity for the job. Most vigilante operatives are barely trained in gun handling. Properly constituted, they’ll be an extension of the police, supplying basic information to enhance community policing. There’s a need to fully recover the state from criminals.”
Mefor continued, “As Information Commissioner, I must comment on security issues whenever necessary. I want to commend the police for combating crime, but I’m concerned about vigilante profiling.
“Anambra’s security challenges are becoming more asymmetric, with embedded enemies. We need to know who the vigilante operatives are. They require psychological training, apart from weapon handling.”
Responding, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam expressed happiness over Mefor’s visit and commitment to improving the state’s security. He urged Ndị Anambra to cooperate with the police.
CP Itam assured that the police plan to restructure vigilante operations and other security levels.
He also disclosed plans for a radio programme, ‘Ask the Police,’ with Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), where DPOs and senior officers will interact with the public weekly.
