EDITORIAL: Anambra Insecurity: Emeakayi Must Start Work Now

By: Tony Okafor

The recent spate of violence in Anambra State, culminating in the tragic loss of four vigilantes and destruction of property in Abetete and Ukpo on Monday November 18, underscores the urgent need for Prince Ken Emeakayi to commence his duties as Special Adviser on Community Security.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s appointment of Emeakayi was a step in the right direction, given his impressive track record in maintaining peace in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area.

However, the latest attacks demonstrate that time is of the essence.

As a seasoned leader, Emeakayi’s expertise is vital in addressing the state’s security challenges, which have worsened in recent times.

His experience in chairing the Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State and serving as President-General of Okija community demonstrates his ability to engage effectively with local stakeholders and security agencies.

Emeakayi cannot achieve this alone. Governor Soludo must empower him to synergize communities across the state, fostering collaboration between local leaders and security agencies.

Effective community engagement, capacity building for vigilantes, and intelligence gathering are crucial to Emeakayi’s success.

Anambra’s history of security challenges, including the Aguleri-Umuleri communal war and extrajudicial killings, has eroded trust between the police and communities.

This has led to the formation of vigilante groups, which, while helpful, sometimes pose a security threat.

To address these challenges, Emeakayi and the government must implement policies effectively, partner with civil society organizations and the media, and ensure citizens are security-conscious and engaged.

Citizens must also play their roles in complementing government efforts and criticizing policies constructively.

Using insecurity in the state as a political tool is unacceptable, especially when the opposition exploits it for their own gain.

This approach not only undermines efforts to address the root causes of insecurity but also perpetuates a cycle of blame-shifting and finger-pointing .

In reality, security should be a collective concern, transcending partisan interests. It’s crucial for politicians to prioritize the well-being of citizens and work together to find lasting solutions.

With Governor Soludo’s support, Prince Emeakayi must swiftly implement a comprehensive security strategy to protect Anambra’s citizens, property and communities.

Hiring a rain stopper, only to experience a deluge, is a stark irony.
