EDITORIAL

BY TONY OKAFOR
The violence that reportedly trailed the Saturday primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State is a disturbing trend that must be addressed before the main election on November 8, 2025.
Allegations of thuggery and delegate list disputes led to the withdrawal of key aspirants, including Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Sir Paul Chukwuma, and Hon. Chuma Umeoji, signaling deeper problems.
A closer examination of the events leading up to the primary election reveals a complex web of issues, including disputed delegates’ lists, alleged involvement of thugs, and an overall atmosphere of tension and fear.
These issues point to a deeper problem that requires a comprehensive solution.
As the APC prepares for the governorship election, it is essential that the party prioritizes the safety and security of the Anambra citizens.
The people of Anambra State deserve a peaceful and transparent electoral process, and it is the responsibility of all the contenders in the race to ensure this happens.
To achieve this, the APC should work with relevant stakeholders, including other contenders in the November 8 poll, security agencies, and civil society organizations, to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governorship candidate of the APC in Anambra State, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and the entire leadership of the party to take immediate action to address these concerns.
The people of Anambra State are watching, and they expect a peaceful and transparent election that reflects the will of the people.
In light of this, we recommend that all participating political parties sign a peace agreement to promote non-violence, respect for electoral outcomes, and cooperation with security agencies.
This accord will help prevent violence and ensure a credible election.
The APC must take a hard look at itself to ensure that the upcoming election is free from violence and disputes .
The future of democracy in Anambra State depends on peaceful, credible, transparent, free, and fair elections.
By working together, we can achieve these goals.
