Chaos and bloodshed gripped the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Thursda as unidentified gunmen unleashed terror in a suspected cult-related attack.
The deadly assault, which occurred around 8:40 p.m. at the bustling Total and Tipper Junctions, claimed the lives of two students, left four others critically wounded, and sparked reports of at least two abductions.
Eyewitnesses say the gunmen, who stormed the area on a motorcycle and in a black Lexus 350 SUV without licence plates, opened fire indiscriminately on unsuspecting students and bystanders.
In the aftermath, viral video footage showed a male and female victim sprawled in pools of blood, struggling for breath inside what appeared to be a hospital emergency ward.
Although initial reports suggested seven students were shot, the Anambra State Police Command later confirmed two fatalities and four injured victims currently receiving treatment.
There are also conflicting reports about possible kidnappings. While some witnesses allege two abductions, a Facebook post by a student disputed the claim.
Responding swiftly, the state police deployed a heavy joint security team led by the Area Commander of Aguata. The operation, which includes the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and local vigilantes, has since taken control of the area and launched a manhunt for the attackers.
In an official statement on Friday, June 20, Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the casualty figures and assured that efforts were underway to track down the suspectsl.“Two victims, including a female, are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Sadly, two deaths have been recorded, and two others were allegedly abducted,” Ikenga said. “We are acting on credible intelligence and eyewitness accounts to track down the hoodlums.”
The police urged calm, assuring the public that updates would be communicated as investigations unfold.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the polytechnic community. Panic-stricken students were seen fleeing in all directions, while others took to social media to share their fear and frustration.
A student union representative, who requested anonymity for safety, described the incident as “barbaric and terrifying.”
“We are not safe anymore. This isn’t just about cult clashes—it’s about our lives,” the student said.
As investigations deepen, tension remains high in Oko, with students and residents alike demanding swift justice and stronger campus security.
