The Anambra State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has dismissed the defection of Hon. Henry Mbachu, member representing Awka South Constituency 1 in the State House of Assembly, to the Young Progressive Party (YPP), describing it as “insignificant.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Okoye, urged party members in Awka South Constituency 1 not to lose sleep over the development.

He described Mbachu and his associates as “fair-weather politicians” who rode on the popularity of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to win election into the state legislature.

Okoye stressed that the Labour Party remained focused on its progressive ideals and would not be distracted by what he termed “petty defections.”

He assured members that the party was firmly committed to Mr. Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition and urged supporters to remain steadfast.

“Mbachu’s departure does not shake our resolve in any way. He is a political minnow whose absence will not affect the strength or direction of the Labour Party in Anambra State,” Okoye stated.

But in a viral video announcing his move, Mbachu defended his decision, saying it was a product of careful consideration.

According to him, the YPP and its governorship candidate, Barr. Paul Chukwuma, presented the best roadmap for the future of Anambra State.

He assured his constituents that his defection was in their best interest, noting that Chukwuma had pledged that Awka and Okpuno indigenes would enjoy priority in employment and opportunities arising from government facilities and investments in the area.

“For the November 8 governorship election, I have chosen to work with the candidate who has presented the most credible manifesto that suits the aspirations of Awka and Okpuno people,” Mbachu declared.
