The Ebonyi Unity Forum in Anambra State has condemned two separate killings in Aguata Local Government Area of the state involving a young woman, identified as Miss Mmesoma of Uga, and an 18-year-old boy in Ora-Eri.
The forum called for thorough investigations and justice for the victims.
Mmesoma was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, identified as Ofoke Emmanuel Chima, an indigene of Ebonyi State, over claims that she intended to leave him for another man despite his alleged significant investment in her well-being.
The teenager, on the other hand, was reportedly killed by his father, John Ezeh, who is also an indigene of Ebonyi State.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Chief Moses Ofoke, and Secretary, Comrade Aloke Nnabuike, the forum described the incidents as disturbing and condemnable, stressing that no relationship dispute, provocation or family misunderstanding could justify the taking of a human life.
The forum disclosed that its representatives had visited the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Anambra State to seek information and engage with the relevant authorities regarding the incidents.
It subsequently convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the cases and determine its position on the matter.
The statement said the forum was calling on the Anambra State Police Command, the State CID and other relevant security agencies to conduct comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigations into both deaths and ensure that anyone found culpable was prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The forum also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, particularly the mother and other relatives of the teenage victim, expressing sympathy over their loss.
However, the organisation cautioned against generalising the alleged actions of individuals to the entire Ebonyi population, insisting that the incidents did not represent the values of the people of the state.
It reaffirmed the commitment of Ebonyi indigenes living in Anambra State to peaceful coexistence and cordial relations with their host communities.
The forum further appealed to residents of Uga and Ora-Eri, community leaders, youths and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continued.
It warned against retaliation, the spread of unverified information and inflammatory comments that could escalate tensions, urging traditional rulers and other stakeholders to work together to preserve peace.
The forum reiterated that violence was unacceptable and called for accountability, justice and the protection of human life. It also expressed confidence that the relevant authorities would handle the cases professionally.
