Nine members of the Nigerian Senate on Thursday announced their defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move political observers say may be connected to the growing nationwide momentum around Peter Obi ahead of future the 2027 general elections.

The senators formally notified the Senate of their decision through separate letters addressed to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, which were read on the floor during plenary.

Leading the group is the senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Victor Umeh. Others who defected include former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal; Abia South senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Adamawa South senator Binos Yaroe; Anambra North senator Tony Nwoye; Kaduna Central senator Lawal Usman; Nasarawa South senator Ogoshi Onawo; Abia Central senator Augustine Akobundu; and the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe.

Although the lawmakers did not immediately state detailed reasons for their defection, sources within the National Assembly hinted that the move may be part of a broader political realignment ahead of what some analysts have described as a looming “Obi political hurricane” expected to sweep across the country in 2027.

Political watchers say the development could significantly alter the balance of forces in the country and strengthen the ADC’s position as an emerging platform for opposition politicians.

In recent months, the ADC has witnessed a surge in popularity, particularly across several states in Northern Nigeria as well as major parts of the South, where its message of political reform and coalition-building appears to be resonating with sections of the electorate.

Analysts believe the entry of prominent figures such as Umeh, Tambuwal and Abaribe may further boost the party’s national visibility and organisational strength.

The defection also signals what insiders describe as the early stages of a wider political migration that could reshape alliances ahead of the next general elections.

Within the Senate chamber, the announcement drew murmurs among lawmakers as Akpabio formally acknowledged the letters and directed that they be entered into the official records of the upper legislative chamber.

Meanwhile, supporters of Obi across the country have continued to describe the unfolding political movement as an “Obi Tsunami,” suggesting that further realignments within parties and legislative bodies may occur in the months ahead.

Political analysts say that if the trend persists, the ADC could rapidly evolve into a formidable national platform capable of challenging the country’s established political order.
