Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Ibezi, has formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), declaring support for the presidential ambition of Peter Obi and the re-election bid of Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District.
Ibezi, popularly known as Ochiagha Idemili, was officially received into the party on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at a ceremony attended by Umeh and other party chieftains, marking a new phase in the former federal lawmaker’s political journey.
The development comes as political parties and aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with alignments among influential politicians expected to shape political activities across Anambra State.
Ibezi’s entry into the NDC is particularly significant to the party’s efforts to consolidate its presence in Idemili North and South, as well as the wider Anambra Central Senatorial District, where his political experience and grassroots connections could contribute to its organisational efforts.
At the reception, Ibezi also expressed support for the NDC candidates for Idemili North and South and Orumba North and South federal constituencies, Eric Anyamene and Hon. Okwudili Nwankwo, popularly known as Ewepudike, respectively.
His declaration of support for Obi’s presidential ambition and Umeh’s re-election bid places him alongside the party’s leading political figures as they prepare for the next electoral contest.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has continued to feature prominently in national political discussions, particularly around governance, public accountability and economic management.
His presidential aspiration under the NDC is expected to be one of the defining issues in the party’s preparations for 2027.
Umeh, on his part, is seeking another term in the Senate, where he represents Anambra Central. His re-election bid is an important consideration in the political calculations of the district, which comprises Awka North, Awka South, Anaocha, Dunukofia, Njikoka, and Idemili North and South local government areas.
Speaking at the event, Ibezi pledged his commitment to the vision of a new Nigeria championed by Obi, signalling his support for the former governor’s presidential aspiration.
Ibezi’s defection adds to the political developments expected to shape the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
