A group in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Independent Leaders Forum (ILF) has called on the party leadership in the state to sanction an Anambra governorship aspirant, Dr Godwin Maduka for breaching a rule set by all aspirants of the party.
The group accused Maduka of inducing delegates of the party to the tune of N50,000 each, an action they said contravened an agreement by all the 16 aspirants of the party for the forthcoming primary election.
Aspirants of the party had last weekend, during a meeting with a chieftain of the party, Mr Olisa Metuh agreed not to spend over N3,000 as giveouts to party delegates, to avoid a situation that may put the party up for sale to the highest bidder.
The leader of the group, Mr Obinna Okafor who addressed journalists said such action by an aspirant, just one day after a rule was made is not acceptable.
“Just 24 hours after that gentleman’s agreement was reached, Dr Godwin Maduka has violated it. On Monday, he gave out N50,000 each to all the ward chairmen, and on Tuesday, he also gave N50,000 each to women leaders of all the wards in the state.
“We are calling on the PDP to sanction him. Someone who can not keep to a gentleman’s agreement cannot be trusted with our party’s ticket. We will go beyond this to champion the closure of his campaign secretariat,” the group said.
The group be said it has constituted itself as a check on the governorship aspirants in the party, saying that doing so will help ensure that aspirants play politics within the ambit of peace that will not injure the chances of the party in winning the Anambra governorship election.
“Anambra is not for sale, and we will not sit and let people induce delegates, same thing they say down and agreed to in a meeting that no one should give money to delegates on a manner that will seem as if they are buying them.”
