Anambra court issues bench warrant against 2 police officers

News

THE Anambra State Ministry of Justice has written the state Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng to order two of his men to appear in court to testify in a matter they were prosecuting.

After failing to appear in court, the Magistrate Court sitting at Nanka in Orumba North local government area of the state on May 24, 2022, issued a bench warrant against Sgt. Paul Aigbogun and CSP Baba Etta directing them to appear in court on August 2, 2022 to testify in suit NO AJMC/338C/2019 (COP vs Kingsley Chinedu Iloduba), but they still failed to obey the order of the court.
A bench warrant addressed to all Police Officers and made available to reporters in Awka read: “CSP Baba Etta and Sgt Paul Aigbogun on 24th May, 2022 at Nanka did show an act of intentional disrespect to the Honourable Court by failing to appear before it to stand trial when the aforementioned case was called up and thereby commiting an offence punishable under the Criminal Code Cap 36 volume 11 Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria”.
In a memo signed by a Principal State Counsel, I.J Oguejiofor for the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the state Commissioner of Police was also asked to cause the two police officers to appear in court to give evidence in the matter.
An industrialist, Chief Ben Ezeibe, who has interest in the matter, frowned at what he called the consistent and reckless way and manner court orders, rulings and judgements were being ignored by the present Anambra State Police command.
He argued that such disregard to court orders does not augur well in a constitutional democracy.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga could not respond to inquiries made to him to react on the matter.
