The locals in Uga community in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday nabbed a member of criminals terrorising the area in name of unknown gunmen.

It was gathered that the suspects got stranded when his gang members in operation fled the crime scene at Nkwọ Ụga market.

An eyewitness told our correspondent ” The gummen stormed the area in a bus, started operating and shooting indiscriminately to disperse the people, while they also snatched some motorcycles from some commercial motorcyclists at the market, to enhance their operation.

“Immediately other members of the gang fled with the snatched motorcycles, youths trooped out to confront them; the driver of the bus was trapped as the courageous youths immediately used iron barricades to block the road and rushed and apprehended him when he jumped down from the bus and tried to escape into a nearby bush”.

A trending video online corroborated our source. The video showed the villagers surrounding and interrogating the suspect, beating him black and blue with machetes and clubs and later stripped him.

Another source said,”The mob nearly set him ablaze, but was advised to interrogate him, rather than kill him, as he had already received adequate beating. During the interrogation, the suspect said he hails from a community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State. He confessed to the crime, and further revealed a partial identity of their leader and herbalist who prepares charms for them.

Reacting to the development, Governor Chukwuma Soludo assured the people of the state that his government was making frantic efforts to ensure adequate security of lives and property in the state, urging the residents to continue to support the government in the fight against insecurity by reporting any suspect or suspected criminal activities to the government and the law enforcement agencies through designated phone numbers.

Governor Soludo who spoke through his press decretary, Christian Aburime, on the telephone, enjoined residents to always hand over any suspect caught to the law enforcement agencies for adequate investigation and prosecution, rather than resorting to jungle justice.

When contacted , the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Tochukwu Ikenga, promised to get back to our correspondent with details on the matter.
