A non-governmental organization, Beecharity Outlook Foundation has partnered the Anambra State Police Command to provide protection for vulnerable children against child labour and abuse.

The partnership was forged on Friday, when the Chairman of the organisation, Dr Paul Nwosu paid a courtesy visit to the state police commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu to commemorate this year’s International Day Against Child Labour.

Nwosu while addressing the commissioner and key officers of his command at the state police command headquarters said it is painful to know that despite the free nursery, primary and secondary education in the state, one still finds children engaging in child labour during school hours.

Addressing CP Orutugu, Nwosu said: “Through advocacy, public enlightenment, community engagement, and partnerships with stakeholders, we have consistently championed the rights of children to education, protection, dignity, and a brighter future.

“This year’s International Day Against Child Labour is being observed under the theme: “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults.” The theme is both timely and compelling.

“It calls on all of us, government institutions, law enforcement agencies, civil society organizations, parents and community leaders, to reject every form of child exploitation and to create an environment where children can learn, grow and realize their full potential.

“Every child found hawking on the streets instead of being in school, every child forced into exploitative labour, and every child denied the opportunity to dream and develop his or her potential represents a loss not only to the child but to society as a whole.

“We believe the Nigeria Police Force is a critical partner in the protection of vulnerable children. We therefore seek stronger collaboration with your Command in identifying, preventing and responding to cases of child labour and child abuse across Anambra State.”

The CP while responding assured that both organizations will partner to help the Nigerian child grow in hope of a brighter future. He said there was need to rescue every child, especially those from poor background, knowing that even those from rich background will meet with them at a point in their lives.

“Are there special stadiums, playgrounds, even schools for children of the rich? And my answer is no. Whether we like it or not, at one point in their development and evolution, these children will meet.

“There must be punishment against parents that are doing otherwise? So, we have to ensure a deliberate law enforcement system. That is where we as police officers come in. And we don’t joke with it.”
