EDITORIAL: Justice For Azuka: A Case of Kidnapping or Assassination?

Editorial

By Tony Okafor

The brutal murder of Justice Azuka, a lawmaker representing Onitsha North Constituency 1 in the Anambra State House of Assembly, is shocking and disturbing.

The gruesome killing of a public servant dedicated to serving the people is a chilling attack on the state and its institutions.

As the investigation into Azuka’s murder continues, many questions remain unanswered.

The circumstances surrounding his abduction on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, and the eventual discovery of his lifeless body on February 6, 2025, are shrouded in mystery.

The alleged collection of N100 million from the victim, only to kill him, defies logic and suggests a more sinister motive.

This heinous crime bears all the resemblance of a premeditated assassination rather than a kidnapping.

The fact that the perpetrators allegedly collected a ransom and still killed their victim raises serious questions about their true intentions.

It is imperative that the authorities conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, considering all angles, including political perspectives.

The murder of Azuka is not just a crime against an individual but against the state and its people.

It is a brazen attack on our collective security and a failure of our institutions to protect citizens’ lives and property.

As we commend Governor Soludo’s latest efforts to bolster security, we urge the government to sustain its momentum and ensure that justice is served and the people’s safety guaranteed.

To achieve this, we recommend that the government establishes an independent panel of inquiry to investigate Azuka’s murder.

This panel should comprise experts from various fields, including law enforcement, forensic science, and human rights.

The panel’s findings should be made public, and those responsible for Azuka’s murder should be brought to justice.

The brutal murder of Hon. Justice Azuka is a wake-up call for our state. We demand justice for him and his family and call on the government to take immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Above all, the pursuit of justice for Hon. Justice Azuka must be insulated from partisan interests and political maneuvering.
