The Chairman of the House Committee on Works in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Nwafor, has said that the committee’s visit to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure was aimed at kick-starting its oversight responsibilities and strengthening collaboration with the ministry.

Hon. Nwafor made this known during a familiarisation visit by members of the House Committee to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure in Awka on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

According to him, the committee is committed to ensuring effective monitoring of ongoing projects across the state in line with its constitutional mandate.

“We are here to formally commence our oversight function as it concerns the Ministry of Works. To effectively carry out this responsibility, we request comprehensive details of all ongoing projects in the state, alongside relevant documents that will guide our work,” Nwafor stated.

The lawmaker further stressed the need for an interface between the committee and contractors handling various government projects across Anambra State.

“There is a need for us to meet with all contractors executing projects in the state so that we can clearly communicate the committee’s expectations and requirements regarding oversight and project delivery,” he added.

In their separate remarks, members of the committee emphasized the importance of maintaining a cordial and productive relationship between the legislature and the ministry to accelerate development and enhance service delivery to the people of the state.

Responding, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arch. Okey Ezeobi, expressed appreciation to the committee for the visit and commended his predecessor for laying a solid foundation in the ministry.

“I commend the House Committee for this visit and also appreciate my predecessor for the remarkable work done. My commitment is to build on those achievements and ensure that Ndi Anambra continue to enjoy quality infrastructure,” Ezeobi said.

The commissioner disclosed that his administration would place greater emphasis on drainage management and environmental sustainability in road construction projects.

“In road design, the first consideration is how to effectively manage water discharge. If drainage is not properly handled, the lifespan of the road is threatened and environmental challenges become inevitable,” he explained.

“It is far cheaper to safeguard the environment than to spend huge resources solving erosion problems that could have been prevented. That is why drainage and water management will remain a top priority for this administration,” he asserted.

“Our resolve is to give Ndi Anambra nothing but the best. We will continue to pursue excellence in project execution and ensure that government investments translate into tangible benefits for our people,” Ezeobi assured.
